The value of a hobby canreadily be appreciated by a man who is kept busy with histasks from day to day, as it gives him an opportunity todevelop the artistic and aesthetic side of his nature, thusgiving him a chance for expressing the finer sense of hisnature. Annually throughout the country there are held manypigeon shows where the best of each variety is exhibited, andthese shows mean much in developing the hobby as well asthe business. Pigeon conventions are held throughout thecountry in connection with the large shows, and much in-terest is manifested in seeing who is able to produce the verybest in his favorite breed. To raise a champion bird as nearthe official standard as it is possible for man to raise pigeonsis indeed an art and something that can only be done by theexperienced breeder after years of careful study of the lawsand principles of heredity and environment. 198 OUTDOOR OPPORTUNITIES

Mostchildren love pets and a few pairs of pigeons make ideal petsfor children. Many a man, in his youth, has spent his leisuretime taking care of a few pairs of pigeons, studying theirhabits and learning their traits and characteristics. It isan ideal means of keeping the boy, who is in the adolescentperiod of life, at home, thus keeping his mind occupied withsomething that will be of value to him in after years. Pigeonsdo not require so much care and attention as to make thework monotonous, but a few minutes each day is all that isrequired for attending to the needs of the birds. It teachesthe boy to be responsible for his pets and to take care of theirwants and needs, and the lesson of responsibility is one ofgreat importance in the life of any child and in the shapingof his future character.
